There’s a lot of great commercial adventure games being made today but with so many free games coming from the community, I thought it would be fun to have a place to give shoutouts to those.

I will start with Elsewhere in the Night. I’m a fan of the people involved with this one and the Manhunter-inspired artwork is really cool

The OG free goat is Beneath a Steel Sky, which is freeware, has art by Dave gibbons of Watchmen fame. Definitely always worth a play if you have never checked it out.

I love Beneath a Steel Sky to bits. It’s worth remembering that it didn’t start out as freeware, though. Revolution just decided one day that they were making enough money off of Broken Sword or something, so they decided to make it free. Actually, I don’t know why they did it. But it certainly was a grand gesture. It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played, period.

Yes, and also Infamous Adventures’ Space Quest II remake.

Speaking of Space Quest, anyone who hasn’t played Incinerations and Vohaul Strikes Back are missing out. Those are two top-tier fan games.

Check out Powerhoof, they have a lot of short games ranging from game jam length (believe some were winners at some game jams) to medium length, and basically consist of prototyping their point and click engine in advance of The Drifter. I recommend the Telwynium in particular
